! Introduction
It is a well-known fact that most bags are made in
China. This fact is not limited to just bags made in China.
Most bags on the market today, including designer
handbags, have their origins in China. In fact, many of
the modern bag design techniques used today were
first developed in China, and subsequently were exported
to Europe and the United States.
In this book we will present these tools of design
using a variety of examples, starting from the
simple and developing into the more complicated.
We will also provide examples of practical advice
on using these techniques in our own design work.
The concepts covered in this book will include:
1. Why it is important to understand and use
the design principles and tools of China
design, including the concept of “inside,
outside, and the contradiction”; 2. How to
design a bag; 3. How to design a logo and
branding for a bag.
Introduction
Since the beginning of human history,
people have used bags to carry various
things. While the first bags were made out
of leather or canvas, most modern bags
are made from synthetic materials, such
as polypropylene and polyester.
Nowadays, we have bags for our daily use
and for travelling purposes. Each bag has
its own design and shape, and the function
of a bag depends on its form. For example,
a traditional bag, which is usually folded
in a square shape, is made for carrying
books. At the same time, another bag may
be designed to carry only cosmetics.
Thus, bags are always made according
to the function of the things they carry,
and their own personal taste and needs.
Bags made in China
The history of China’s bag industry has
been quite long. In ancient China, the
use of bags was not only limited to the
carrying of goods, but also included
carrying the corpses of the dead to the
grave. In the Song Dynasty, one of the
classic books in Chinese literature, the
Book of Songs, described: “They know
no rest, neither day nor night.
